Many people probaly depended on watermelon as a primary water source. After all watermelon is 92% water. The health benefits of watermelon have been know about for a long time. It is not just a recent find.

Watermelons are a favorite among the world and the people just cannot seem to get enough of this fruit. The nutritionists have appreciated the health benefits provided by the watermelons for a long time. The fact that is most important about the watermelon is that it is fat free and low in calories and hence is considered to be the ideal diet food.

While picking out a watermelon, ensure that it is symmetrical with no cuts and bruises. A watermelon that is ripe will have a healthy sheen, a dull rind and a dull yellow spot on its underside on which it touched the ground. To confirm that the melon is completely ripe, thump it and the sound should be dull and hollow while the weight of the watermelon should be heavy considering its size.

Today I Start Using an Exercise Ball, It's Really Comfortable!

Exercise Balls Are Changing our workouts. With Exercise Ball. you can do various types of exercises and the many names the exercising tool has taken on since its inception into the fitness world.
  • Top Reasons to Switch to an Exercise Ball Instead of Office Chair
Exercise balls as office chairs are becoming a popular new fad in many offices around the world, and for good reason. I’ll be highlighting some of the top reasons that you should ditch your office chair and roll in an exercise ball.

- No matter how good your posture, sitting in the same position for hours is bad for your back. In fact, it’s worse on your back than standing. With an exercise ball as a chair you are constantly moving, recalibrating your muscles and keeping the blood flowing.

- If you’re like me, you’re a constant fidgeter which often causes one to lose concentration on a task. With an exercise ball your mind will be too busy adjusting your body’s weight to the ball to think about fidgeting, which tests have proven also helps your brain retain information and stay on task.
- An exercise ball is not a panacea to bad posture; you still have to work at it and be aware of your body slouching. There is a technique in weight lifting that suggests you focus just as much of your mental power on picturing the muscles you are working out in a specific lift just as much as you would PHYSICALLY. This is the same idea behind good posture and muscle stability.
In order to use an exercise ball, or get exercise period, you have to motivated. If you aren't motivated by something, make it health reasons, personal reasons or any pretty girl next to you, sticking to a good diet plan and workout routine is a lost cause. Exercise balls aren't for everyone, though theoretically they can be used by all body types of all ages. That said, you do have to be moderately coordinated not only to use a gym ball, but in order to benefit from the range of motion the exercise ball requires you have to be flexible, limber and patient until you get comfortable with the rolling motion.

NOTE : You’re abs will not magically turn into a rock hard six pack after using the exercise ball a few times. Rock hard, 6-pack abs take a long time to acquire and it’s even more difficult to maintain. However, Exercise balls are a great tool athletes and celebrities use to keep their abs in top form.

There are various exercise ball exercises that can be done both indoors and outdoors. That's the beauty of the exercise ball; you can take it anywhere you go. People can use the workout ball for yoga, basic ab crunches or can even be used in conjunction with dumb bells. Stability balls can always double as a nice chair too if your seating is limited. Let's be honest here; not everyone that starts using an exercise ball is incredibly fit. If anything, people are beginning their gym ball workouts in an effort to lose weight, get in better overall shape or to improve their flexibility after an accident. The idea behind using an exercise ball in your workout is to make your routine somewhat fun. Hours on the treadmill, rep after rep on the weight bench and endless biking treks get tiresome. Adding a regular exercise ball routine to your workout regimen can spark new interest and motivation in your weight loss goals or whatever your desired benefit may be.

It doesn't matter what you call it: Swiss ball, physio ball, ab ball, gym ball or exercise ball; it's all the same thing. Some exercise balls are slightly bigger than others, but they all serve the same purpose. The purpose of an exercise ball is to put the person workingout in control of their routine.
  • Exercise Ball Therapy for Lower Back Pain Relief

The exercise ball is an exercise treatment option for back pain sufferers and is designed to help prevent or minimize further episodes of low back pain as part of a rehabilitation program. The exercise ball is effective in rehabilitation of the back because it strengthens and develops the core body muscles that help to stabilize the spine.

The benefits of exercising on an exercise ball for people with low back pain include:
•Simple and versatile way to start moving again after a back pain episode
•Improved muscle strength
•Greater flexibility and range of motion of the spine
•Enhanced balance and coordination of core muscle groups used to stabilize the spine and control proper posture while using the exercise ball, which in turn reduces stress on the low back
•Increased tendency to maintain a neutral spine position during exercise
•In particular, many Swiss ball exercises are designed to bring movement to the spine in a controlled manner to help keep the discs nourished. Moving the vertebrae helps nourish the discs in the spine by increasing blood flow around the disc and by causing the water to flow in and out of the disc
  • But is it Ergonomic?
Those who design and sell ergonomic desk chairs, which cost hundreds of dollars each, naturally caution you about using a $15-30 exercise ball instead. Certainly, those with back pain and other musculo-skeletal disorders need to use caution when changing chairs for hours of sitting. If you experience increased lower back pain when using the exercise ball as a chair, discuss with your medical provider and consider discontinuing use.

You must get the right size of ball. Your thighs should slope downwards slightly rather than be at 90 degrees. But the ball should not be so tall that you end up balancing on your wrists at the keyboard.

There have not been many studies on the benefits of using an exercise ball. However, the physical therapists and personal trainers are recommending using the ball as a chair and say they do so themselves. Perhaps it is a fad, but it is one with many converts among the exercise and therapy experts.
  • Comfort
When starting out using a ball, you should begin with a half hour or less and build up your time each day to see how you tolerate it. I find that the ball is far more comfortable than most desk chairs.
Once you have the ball handy, it is easy to just roll back from the desk and do a few ab crunches.

I love my exercise ball! It is so much easier on my back to do my ab crunches on the ball, rather than on the hard floor. There really isn't enough I can say about all the wonderful benefits of using the exercise ball. PLEASE Try one for yourself! You will be very impressed with everything it will do for you!

Teeth Acid Erosion

Acid erosion is strongly linked to the consumption of acidic foods and drinks. Acids demineralise and soften the tooth surface making it more susceptible to abrasion, particularly by toothbrushing with or without toothpaste.

In its early stages tooth wear is often thought to be harmless. However as it progresses tooth wear can result in dentine hypersensitivity, loss of tooth shape and colour, and may require complex restorative intervention. Yet many people remain unaware of the consequences of tooth wear and the measures that can be taken to protect teeth from this slow and insidious process.

  • Causes
The awareness of tooth wear has increased markedly over recent years. Much of this is linked to changes in diet and oral care.

A.Causes of tooth erosion due to extrinsic acids (from outside the body):
1. Teeth are lasting longer, Increased success by dentistry in the control of caries and periodontal diseases has extended the longevity of the natural dentition. Healthier unrestored teeth are exposed for longer to the gradual processes of everyday wear.

2. The modern diet paradox Modern diets are often rich in acids from a wide range of sources. Notably, many fruits, fruit juices, soft/pop drinks,vinegar-based salad dressingsand and wine have a low pH, sufficient to soften and demineralise enamel surfaces at approx pH 5.5 and below, and dentine at pH 6.5 and below, depending upon other factors such as titratable acidity, and calcium, phosphate and fluoride content. Large amounts of these beverages are not healthy for you for many reasons, so not only your teeth will benefit from reduced consumption, but also your nutrition status and your body's overall health. So-called "sports drinks" in particular contain large amounts of citric acid
Acid temporarily softens the surface of the enamel. It is a process normally mitigated by the natural action of saliva due to the presence of calcium, but frequent or prolonged acidic encounters leave less time for remineralisation to occur. In this weakened state, surface enamel is prone to wear from the abrasive action of toothpaste and tooth brushing.

3.Imbalanced eating patterns For example, not eating something that counterbalances the acidity of fruit, such as nuts, at the time of eating the fruit.

4.Snack foods ,Many of them are acidic.

5.Some medicines are acidic And therefore, erosive. They can cause dental erosion on direct contact with the teeth when the medication is chewed or held in the mouth prior to swallowing.

6.Environmental factors such as the chlorine and other chemicals in swimming pools can cause erosion over time.

7.Brushing habits, Don,t brush your teeth right after eating or drinking something acidic. Give your teeth some time. If you brush immediately after eating or drinking, you may cause tooth wear because the enamel is softened by the acid. After an hour or so, brush gently with a soft-bristled brush.

B.Causes of tooth erosion due to intrinsic acids (from inside the body):

1.Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux, in which stomach acids come up into the oesophagus and mouth, can cause severe tooth erosion. Gastric acids are highly acidic with pH levels that can be less than 1.

2.Eating disorders Such as Bulimia or anorexia nervosa that cause frequent vomiting are also responsible for tooth enamel loss caused by the gastric acids.
Besides vomiting, persons who suffer from bulimia tend to consume larger quantities of fresh fruits and acidic beverages that worsen the problem.

3.Alcoholism could also cause vomiting related loss of tooth enamel.

4.Low salivary flow rate is a significant risk factor for dental erosion due to reduced pH buffering capacity (its ability to neutralize changes in mouth’s pH)
Signs and diagnosis

  • Signs and diagnosis
Everyone with natural teeth is likely to develop some signs of tooth wear, but many patients are unlikely to be aware that it is happening to them until it has reached an advanced stage.
Currently, dental erosion normally only reaches a diagnostic threshold when restorative dentistry is indicated. Improving recognition of the early signs and symptoms is crucial if effective preventative measures are to be taken.

A: Early signs
1. Sensitivity As dentine becomes exposed, an occasional slight twinge may be felt when consuming hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks
2. Discolouration Teeth can have a slight yellow appearance as the dentine shows through
3. Rounded Teeth A rounded 'sandblasted' look on the surface and edges of the teeth

B: Late stages

4. Transparency Front teeth may appear slightly transparent near their biting edges
5. Advanced Discolouration Teeth may show a darker yellow appearance which is the exposed dentine showing through
6. Cracks Small cracks and roughness may be present at the edges of the teeth
7. Severe Sensitivity As dentine continues to becomes exposed over time, teeth can suffer from severe dentine hypersensitivity
8. Cupping Small dents may appear on the chewing surface of the teeth , at this stage any fillings may appear to rise up
9.Pain or irritation in your mouth
10.Sharp tooth edges

At any stage of dental erosion, dentine hypersensitivity may occur. This could range from infrequent twinges during consumption of hot, cold or sweet foods, through to fairly continuous sensitivity readily provoked by the mildest of stimuli. Occasional sensitivity may well go unreported by the patient during routine examinations.

  • Prevention

Intervention is key. Increased vigilance during routine examinations together with lifestyle advice can slow the progression of symptoms.

•Reduce or eliminate intake of carbonated drinks
•Cease retaining acidic foods and drinks inside the mouth
•Chew gum or suck a sugar-free lozenge to encourage saliva production and protect enamel, or eat a piece of cheese after an acidic meal
•Leave brushing of teeth for at least one hour after consuming acidic food or drink
•Brush with a soft toothbrush, using a low-abrasion, low-acidity, high-fluoride dentifrice
•Avoid fried or fatty foods if you have Acid reflux disease.

•Enjoy smaller, more frequent meals rather than eating large quantities at once.
•Take antacid tablets if needed, but don't over-use them.
•Drink plenty of water
•Do not smoke.
•Don't brush your teeth before eating or drinking something acidic? This probably doesn't happen too often, but if you do, you should stop. Brushing teeth immediately before drinking or eating something acidic brushes away the saliva that protects your enamel from acid.

•Don't brush your teeth too vigorously. It would seem like a good idea to brush hard, to scrub away all the remnants of food you've eaten. But brushing too vigorously can wear down and weaken a tooth's enamel. Instead, brush teeth gently, using circular strokes and a soft-bristled brush.
•Avoid grazing through the day. If you enjoy nibbling on food all day long, you may be endangering your teeth. The best solution is to ensure that the foods that you consume are either low in acidity or are combined with foods able to counteract the acidity and reduce your need for the acidic food. For example, consuming nuts with fruit or cheese with carrots may be one way to reduce the effects of acid wear. Nuts and dairy foods are considered helpful balancers to acidic foods.
• Rely on dental floss and toothpicks in between morning and evening brushing.
• Use a straw. Reduce the contact of juice and soda drinks with your teeth by drinking through a straw. This is only a minor help, so don't rely on it as a major solution!

  • Things You'll Need
  1. Dental floss
  2. More water in your diet
  3. Neutral foods

Safe Whitening
Most commercial whitening products use peroxide-based solutions that whiten teeth without the erosion of enamel caused by acids.
What can you use as a natural way to whiten teeth? If used sparingly, baking soda. Although baking soda is abrasive and can cause wear on the enamel and roots of teeth, if used properly can help maintain a bright smile by removing accumulated surface stains on teeth. If you choose baking soda as a natural way to whiten teeth the following tips may help:

1. When brushing with baking soda, do not "scrub"! Brush gently to avoid wearing away the enamel and roots of your teeth.

2. To lessen the abrasiveness of baking soda and improve taste, first apply your normal toothpaste to your brush then dip into the baking soda.

3. The most effective way to remove stains involves making a slurry. Make the slurry by mixing a liquid with baking soda, then use an absorbent material such as a paper towel to "dab" the mixture and absorb the excess liquid, leaving you with a "paste". Using your favorite mouthwash improves the taste and provides other antimicrobial effects.

4. Limit the use of baking soda to one thorough brushing per month unless you have very heavy staining from coffee, tea, or smoking. Once per month is adequate for most people to maintain a whiter smile. Too much of a good thing will cost you in tooth sensitivity and enamel loss.

  • Warning Do not ignore the signs of acid wear on teeth
Have a nice day!

Homemade Facial Deep Clean

Homemade facial masks are a wonderful way to deep cleanse your skin so that it is soft and silky to touch and positively glowing with freshness to look at.
We try to eat healthily, avoiding (most of the time) things which are not good for us, such as sugar, chips and cream. But how often do we stop to think about what we are putting onto our skin? One might know that a moisturiser has, for instance, neroli or lavender and possibly a sun factor included, but how many chemicals does in contain? Sometimes it's impossible to know what's in a moisturiser unless you are a qualified pharmacist who understands the fancy latin sounding names on the back of the cosmetic jar. However if you make your own facial masks you will know what's included. They are every bit as good, if not much better, than the very best salon mask.
Before applying your homemade facial masks make sure you give yourself a deep cleansing with a facial steam to open the pores up. Now you are ready to relax, remember to leave your mask on for at least 15 - 20 minutes.

What to Do if You Get the Flu?!

You may have heard everyone talking about flu season, but you might not give it another thought unless you actually get the flu. If you do get sick, knowing what to do can help you feel better faster.

Try these tips if you get the flu:

•Drink lots of fluids. Juice, water, and soup are great ways to get fluids in. But avoid caffeinated drinks, which won't hydrate you as well.

•Get lots of sleep and take it easy. This is a great time to chill with your favorite DVDs without your mom or dad asking you to help out around the house!

•Wear layers. You might be cold one minute and hot the next, and wearing several layers — like a T-shirt, sweatshirt, and robe, makes it easy to add or remove clothes as needed.

•Wash your hands frequently. You don't want to spread the flu to everyone else, if you can help it. Also, avoid sharing cups and eating utensils with other people.

Recommend Home remedies for Flu :
1: Take Vitamin C to boost immune system and increase the number of white blood cells
2: Take Garlic capsules to decrease de growth of the virus.
3: Make a tea mixing:

1 tsp. bayberry bark.
1 tsp. grated ginger root.
½ tsp. cayenne powder.
1 cup of boiling water.
Let it sit for 20 minutes.

4: Take "cold and flu" tablets this homeopathic preparation has help people avoid getting infected with the flu virus by taking 1 tablet a day throughout the flu season.
5: If the fever is too high, take catnip tea and ½ tsp. of lobelia tincture every 4 hours. Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding and do not give to a child less than one year old.

Most people who get the flu get better without having to see their doctor. But if your flu symptoms get worse, if you have a high temperature for more than a few days, if you have any trouble breathing, or if you seem to get better but then feel worse again, call your doctor right away.
And next time, get the flu vaccine so that you're less likely to get the flu!

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Iodine...What they Don'tT tell us about this MIRACLE nutrient!

Iodine is a mineral that is essential for the growth and development of an individual. It is mainly present in saline water and soil. In fact, the amount of iodine that we can obtain from plants is dependent on the extent of iodine present in the soil. The main source of iodine in the diet of an individual comprises of salt intake and consumption of seafood. The mineral is a major component of the thyroid hormones produced in the body, which are responsible for regulation of metabolic processes, such as growth and energy expenditure. Since thyroid gland does not have the capacity to store the required amount of iodine, it is necessary for a person to consume small amounts of iodine on a regular basis.

Iodine was once a common ingredient in many foods such as bread. In the 1980's, iodine was removed from our breads and replaced with Bromine. Bromine worsens iodine-deficiency problems because it INHIBITS absorption of iodine in the body! It is also a known CARCINOGEN.

Iodine is a body detoxifier! It has been proven to detoxify the body by flushing the following harmful substances out of the body:

– Bromine
– Fluoride
– Chlorine
– Mercury
– Lead
– Aluminum
– Cadmium

Iodine deficiency is linked to the following:

– Thyroid disease
– Prostate cancer
– Breast cancer
– Ovarian cancer
– Endometrial cancer
– Ovarian cysts
– Fibrocystic Breast Disease
- Fibromyalgia (strong evidence supports fibromyalgia is simply iodine deficiency)

Iodine is cancer's enemy! “Iodine is not toxic to normal cells but IS toxic to cancer cells!”

In addition to causing cancer, an iodine deficiency will cause existing cancer to be more aggressive. Iodine is responsible for controlled cell death - a normal, necessary function of out bodies. Iodine plays a huge role in keeping cells in check so they don't grow out of control and overtake the body. Cancer cells are cells that keep growing and don't die! (thus lumps/tumors). Iodine deficiency seems like a logical explanation for cancer!
Coincidentally, Japanese women have lower rates of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers as well as fibrocystic breast disease. Go figure! Their diets are loaded with iodine from fish and seaweed!

Iodine supplementation improves / cures the following:

- Thinning hair / hair loss
– Fatigue / tiredness
– Feeling cold
– Brain fog / memory problems
- Muscle pain
- Basically all symptoms of hypothyroidism!

Iodine Rich Foods

Arame
Cheddar cheese
Cheese cake
Condensed milk
Dulse
Eggs
Fish oils
Fresh fish such as Haddock and Cod Hijike (Japanese seaweed)

Iodized salt
Jaffa cakes
Kelp
Kombu
Malt bread
Mayonnaise
Naan Bread (leavened, oven-baked flatbread.)
Sea foods
Sea kelp
Sea salt
Seaweed
Trifle
Wakame
Yorkshire pudding

More Benefits of Iodine

A healthy intake of iodine helps in maintaining shiny skin, teeth and hair. Lack of iodine in the body can not only cause hair fall, but also restrain hair growth.

One of the most prominent benefits of iodine is that it influences the functioning of the thyroid gland, thereby increasing the production of the hormone. This increased production of thyroid hormone is directly proportional to the basic metabolic rate. It influences the heart rate, blood pressure, body weight and temperature and also helps in protein synthesis.

Less intake of iodine leads to loss in energy levels and the feeling of being lethargic. Iodine helps in optimum utilization of calories without allowing deposit of excessive fats, thereby raising the energy levels.

The presence of iodine in the body helps in ensuring the apoptosis or programmed cell death, which is essential in the formation of new organs as well as in the removal of malignant cells, like cancer cells or diseased cells.

7 Signs of Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency is a serious problem in the developing world but many Europeans and North Americans are also deficient. Iodine consumption has decreased by about 50% in the United States since the early part of the 20th century.
If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, you may want to have your thyroid tested as well as your iodine levels and then, after speaking with your doctor, consider whether adding extra iodine to your diet would be beneficial.
  • Hypothyroidism
Low iodine levels can lead to hypothyroidism. This is because iodine regulates thyroid hormones in the body.
Fatigue
  • Fatigue
is a common symptom of iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism.
  • Weight Gain
Low iodine levels can cause weight gain. Weight gain may be one of the early warning signs of hypothyroidism.
  • Depression
Like fatigue and weight gain, depression is a common symptom of hypothyroidism caused by iodine deficiency.
  • Goiter
When iodine levels in the body are too low, the thyroid can enlarge. An enlarged thyroid is referred to as a goiter.
  • Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Research indicates that iodine deficiency may be responsible for fibrocystic breast disease, a condition in which painful but benign lumps develop in the breasts that can worsen with hormonal fluctiations.
  • Pregnancy Complications
Iodine deficiency in pregnant women can lead to complications including miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and birth defects

How much Iodine in your diet do you need?

0 - 6 months - 110 micrograms per day
7 - 12 months - 130 mcg per day
1 - 3 years - 90 mcg per day
4 - 8 years - 90 mcg per day
9 - 13 years - 120 mcg per day
Males age 14 and older - 150 mcg per day
Females age 14 and older - 150 mcg per day

Ways to Wake Up Feeling Fresh in the Morning

Okay so we know that waking up and doing things in the morning is the best way to achieve our goals in life. We can exercise, study, work, meditate, etc. much better than other times in the day. However, most of us feel pretty crap in the morning. So what can we do about it? How can we wake up ready for work?

Here are some things you can do in the short term and the long term so that you will wake up fresh and energetic in the morning. I’ve divided them up into three sections; (1) the night before and (2) during the night and (3) the morning.
  • The Night Before
1. Avoid coffee, red wine and chocolate the night before
To wake up fresh you need to get a good sleep and one of the best ways to ruin a good sleep is to upset your gut. You really need to keep it happy during the night.
Coffee, red wine and chocolate have been scientifically shown to disturb your sleep more than any other food. They upset your intestines in such a way that you will wake up constantly or have a very light sleep that doesn’t re charge you at all. Try not to have these things after lunch time.

2. Go to bed happy
One of the best ways to get a terrible sleep is to go to bed before you solve a problem . Never let the sun set on an argument, even if you  have to compromise a little bit on your own ego. Before you go to bed make sure you are happy (as much as you can).
3. Meditate, pray and calm down before going to bed
Every night before going to bed, do about 30 minutes to an hour of meditation. This is amazing as it allows you to throw out all the days worries and forget about the worries of tomorrow. The future cannot be changed while you are asleep and the past is gone so there is no point losing sleep over it! Let it go.
Meditate or pray or do whatever you do. Simply sitting there and watching your breath is a great way to prepare yourself for a nice deep sleep.
4. Don’t eat dinner right before bed
A lot of people run home after work, cook up some dinner and then eat it and go to bed. This is a bad idea. The process of digestion takes a while and you do not want to be laying down right after you ate a big meal. Try and leave a few hours in between your bedtime and your dinner and see how you feel the next day.

5.Go to the toilet
Even if you do not need to go to the toilet before bed you should still have a go and squeeze out whatever you can. The reason for this is that the kidneys will continue to work during the night and by the morning your bladder will be nice and full. If your bladder fills up early you might feel the need to go during the night and this cuts out valuable time from your sleep.
You might think that sleeping is about the total time spent asleep but this is incorrect. It is important to stay asleep without breaking it because it takes some hours to get into the “zone” where you are truly at rest. A toilet break interrupts this zone.
  • During the Night

6. Not "too hot, too cold"
Another sleep related tip: your sleep is greatly affected by the how hot or cold you are during the night. It is important to get a good balance as this keep your energies calm and stops them from spiking.
Try and find a balance between clothes and bed covers. For example, I like to sleep without any clothes but with a heavy blanket. This keeps my temperature pretty consistent.

7. Keep the window open
One of the best things you can do for your health in general and your sleep in specific is to keep your window slightly open during the night. This has two benefits.
Firstly, the gap in the window will allow poisonous carbon dioxide to float away. The reason the human body breathes out is because carbon dioxide is poisonous. And during the night you take a lot of breaths and your room fills up with this gas. Let it out the window.
The second reason is that you need to allow new oxygen to float in. This might also help you regulate the temperature of the room.

8. Cut out noise, it’s actually killing you!
''Your life is actually being shortened by noise during the night.'' YES, that’s right…that screaming police car or roaring traffic is actually killing you! the noise has an effect on your heart and waking up many times during the night puts your body under a lot of stress.
Try and keep your room quiet by wearing some earplugs. You can get earplugs that only cancel out certain sounds so that you can still hear your alarm or a baby monitor on your bedside table.
  • The Morning
9. Drink a glass of water
A cool glass of water on an empty stomach actually has a lot of health benefits as well as serving to wake you up. The water will kick start your metabolism and as such you will wake up faster and feel more alert.

10. Exercise
When you are groggy in the morning and nice run in the fresh air can wake you up fast. However, the interesting thing is that when you exercise in the morning you will actually have more energy the NEXT day. The more you exercise the more energy you will have as you become fitter and healthier.

11. Don’t drink coffee… everyday
Science is now showing that our body becomes accustomed to the caffeine in our coffee and we have less of a reaction to it. This means that your daily cup of coffee is waking you up less and less every day that you drink it.
A better idea is to save the morning coffee for when you are really tired and need a little bit of help. Perhaps if you had to stay out late or get up extra early and you have disturbed your regular sleeping habit. This is the time to have a cup of coffee.

12. Breathe deeply
The first thing you should do in the morning is take some deep breaths into your stomach and concentrate on waking up. Imagine breathing in a bright white light that makes your body feel happy and light.

13. Have something to be excited about
If you get up and go to a job you hate to work with a boss that drives you crazy you are not going to really enjoy waking up. However, if you have something you enjoy to go to you will be more likely to wake up happy knowing you have a bit of joy coming your way.
If you can’t leave your terrible boss then you should make time in the morning to do some sport or activity that makes you happy. Start your day with something happy and fun as opposed to starting it with work.

14. Be grateful for not dying
Every time you go to bed you should consider that you won’t wake up. That way, when you wake up you will be especially grateful for the day you have ahead of you. Instead of seeing the day as a burden that you have to “get through” you will see it as an opportunity to do something meaningful and beneficial.
Why? Because you could die tonight.

Each of these tips works. I have tried some on my own. And the great thing is that the more of these tips you apply the fresher you will feel when you wake up. Try them yourself.

Have a Nice Day! :)

Medical Myths You Must Know!

Medical myths are part of our everyday life. Everyone knows them but only a few realise that they are myths and not real: Here are examples of medical and health myths that have been sustained over the years. Many people, including doctors believe in these myths although they are either not true or lack scientific evidence. Some of these myths also have very amazing and unbelievable origins.

  •  Carrots can improve your eyesight
This is one of the best medical myths ever. We have been told many times that eating carrots improves our eyesight because they contain a lot of vitamin A. Indeed carrots do contain vitamin A but consuming a lot of vitamin A has nothing to do with improving our vision.
The origins of this myth go back to the dates of World War II. The British Intelligence service spread the rumour that their pilots ate a lot of carrots and that’s why they were so successful in destroying German targets. The truth for their success was the use of radars and not the consumption of huge amounts of carrots!! In an effort to hide the existence of radars the British spread around this myth that is sustained with great success until today.

  •  Eating spinach can make you stronger
I am sure that most of us have seen Popeye getting stronger and more powerful with a tin of spinach. In fact Popeye is the first word that comes to mind when we hear about spinach. The truth about this lovely myth is that spinach does not make you stronger. On the contrary spinach is a vegetable that contains low levels of iron. There are other green vegetables that contain more iron than spinach.
  • The consumption of turkey makes us sleepy
This myth is based on the fact that turkey contains tryptophan, an amino acid located in protein that affects sleep and mood. However, the quantity contained in the turkey is not more than in other foods like chicken or veal and in some cases it is even less per gram than it is contained in pork or cheese. The myth apparently stems from the fact that all of us feel drowsy after a big meal (and eating turkey is a big meal), because the body consumes energy for digestion and thus the blood flow and oxygenation in the brain is reduced.

  •  We need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day
An article by the USA National Academy of Sciences (60 years ago) noted that a good indication for water consumption for adults is 2.5 litres a day. In the same article they also noted, in the last sentence, that this quantity is already contained in the food we eat. In other words we consume the water our body needs in the food we eat.

Researchers suggested that if we ignore the last statement from the article then it could be interpreted as a directive for the consumption of eight glasses of water a day. Other research suggests though that we get sufficient levels of water in our body from the typical daily consumption of juices, milk and even caffeine drinks.
  • Coffee is harmful for our health
Coffee is consumed on a daily basis by millions of people. It is the world's morning favourite drink.
It is a fact that the excessive consumption of coffee may be hitting the nerves and this can cause increased excitability. Normal consumption of coffee though can be good for our health.A study by Harvard University with more than 125,000 people drinking coffee showed that women were 30% less likely to suffer type ‘2 diabetes’. Other studies have shown that coffee reduces the risk of developing Parkinson's and cancer of the colon.
Two to three cups of coffee a day is beneficial to our health. However if we notice symptoms of anxiety and insomnia, then it is better to reduce coffee or switch to decaffeinate drinks.

  •  Fresh is always better than frozen
Ever since scientists have pointed out the benefits of antioxidants, people started to believe that eating more fresh fruits and vegetables is a better choice than eating frozen. In fact we tend to believe that frozen is second-class food.
Frozen food can be as beneficial as fresh food because fresh fruits and vegetables are cut when they are at the top of their nutritional value and transferred to factories where they are frozen. This process locks down their nutrient ingredients and so frozen food has all the nutrient ingredients. Fresh fruit and vegetables when placed on the shelves - they lose some of their nutritional ingredients because of heat, air and moisture.

  • Eggs increase cholesterol
During the'60s and'70s, scientists have associated cholesterol in the blood with heart disease. Eggs that are rich in cholesterol eventually came out of our daily diet.
Recent studies showed that saturated and trans fat in the diet of a person are more likely to increase the risk of heart disease than eggs. One egg has only 1.6 grams of saturated fatty acids, while a glass of milk with 2% fat contains 3 grams of saturated fat. Eggs provide protein in the body as well as vitamins A and D without making you gain extra weight. If you eat an egg for breakfast, you simply need to be careful with the amount of cholesterol that will take from other foods during the day.

  •  Bananas are high in Fat
Many people think that bananas are high in fat. The truth about this myth is that bananas are actually low in fat. Bananas are made up of 95 calories and ½ gram of fat.

  •  Chocolates causes acne
There is no evidence that chocolate; sugar, oil, milk or any other food causes acne. Some people believe that certain foods may be the cause of acne. No clinical research has proven that food is associated with acne.
  •  Cholesterol is bad for you.
Sure there is ‘bad’ cholesterol and ‘good cholesterol’. Bad cholesterol is created by saturated fats found in food like meat and cheese. This type cholesterol can be the cause of heart diseases.
Good cholesterol is found in unsaturated fats such as nuts, seeds and oily fish. Good cholesterol helps transporting cholesterol away from the arteries, back to the liver.

  • The shaving of the hair makes them grow faster, darker or coarser
This myth is repeated by the media and reinforced when short beard appears after shaving. A clinical study conducted in 1928 showed that shaving does not have an impact on the growing of hair, a finding that is also confirmed by more modern studies. When hair is re-grown after shaving they seem more rugged because they do not have the smooth head of the non-shaved hair. They also seem darker because they are not affected by the sun like the non-shaved hair.
  • The Use of Lipsticks can poison you
In 2007, an environmental group named Campaign for Safe Cosmetics checked 33 different lipsticks for lead. Despite the fact that there is no allowable limit of lead in lipsticks, 1 / 3 of the samples checked they contained a greater quantity of lead than that allowed in sweets. These findings created the myth that lipsticks can be harmful to your health because of the amount of lead they carry.

But after studying the results of this research by American Nutrition Association, they decided that the risk from lead in lipsticks is extremely small. Lead poisoning is usually caused by other environmental factors, such as pipes and paint in old houses for example. In conclusion, there is no reason to concern that the use of lipsticks can poison you.
  • Not washing properly can cause acne
Stress and the effects of hormones on sebaceous glands are the main causes of acne. It is not in any way proved that not showring properly will create acne. On the contrary cleaning your face too often can actually increase acne as the body compensates to replace the body oil washed away. On the contrary what you can achieve by washing your face twice a day is to get rid of blackheads
  • Reading with low light ruins eyesight
The idea that low light ruins eyesight has its roots in the pain of the eye. Low lighting makes it difficult for the eye to focus, leading to fewer eye-closings and hence this leads to dry eyes. So reading with low lighting is «inconvenient» but does not create permanent damage to the eyes.
  • Computer screens can damage our eyes
The enormous usage of computers both in the office and at home has created the idea that computers are machines harmful to our eyes. Many people visit the eye doctors and others are making complaints about discomfort and fatigue in the eyes after prolonged and continuous use of the computer.
A number of investigations and researches made for this myth have shown that video terminals are not detrimental to our eyes. This is because it has been proven that the video terminals emit very little or no harmful radiation such as X-rays or ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, with simple words, our eyes are not in a long-term risk from a computer screen.

  • The Use of mobile phones can affect male fertility

A team of researchers from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine carried out a study with 364 men. The purpose of this study was to see if the use of mobile phones could affect male fertility. The study showed that men who used their mobile phones for more than 4 hours per day showed around 23% lower concentration of sperm compared with those not using any mobile phone.

Although the researchers that made this study raised the theory that the decline in sperm quality can be either the effects of electromagnetic radiation or heat in the testes, this is just a theory based on a survey. Therefore it remains a simple observation that is not based on concrete facts that can prove that mobile phones can indeed affect male fertility. It excludes, for example, other important factors such as stress of people who speak more than 4 hours in the mobile, or a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Metabolism is the same for men and women

This myth suggests that the body metabolism i.e. daily energy consumption is the same for Men and women. The proportion of fat and muscles in the body is what determines the amount of energy that will be spent. Men, who typically have less fat and more muscles tend to spend more energy than women, therefore they have a better metabolism than women.

  •  Fat people have a lower metabolism than slim people

This myth is completely wrong. Fat people have a better metabolism than slim people. This is because a fat person burns more calories for movement because it needs more energy (due to the extra weight) compared to a thinner person.

  • As we get older our metabolism is increasing
As we get older our basic metabolism is actually decreasing. This because over the years our body muscles are reduced and fat is increased. More specifically, the basic metabolism of the individual from the age of ten is falling about 1% to 2% per decade.

  • Reducing the number of meals per day will improve metabolism
Digestion is a function of our body that burns many calories. So greatly reducing the quantity of food we eat, our body will also reduce the rate of metabolism to save energy.

If we want to increase our metabolism we must not reduce the meals we eat but to choose food with fat-free protein and a lot of fibber. Furthermore, consumption of small meals at regular intervals (every 3 to 4 hours) helps for the better allocation of calories in our body and as a result this increases the basic metabolism.

Now,You will first be presented with more myths, and then the truth that will dispel this myth.
  • Myth-Whey Protein Makes You Fat
The Truth – Whey protein doesn’t make you fat. Only eating an excessive amount of daily calories can make you gain fat. Eating a proper amount of daily protein will ensure maximum muscle gains. On the other hand, if you under eat protein, you make it harder for your body to add muscle.

  • Myth -Supplements Are A Waste Of Money
The Truth – There are an amazing number of effective nutritional and muscle building supplements on the market that help to maximize performance and overall health. Don’t let the exaggerated claims of a handful of snake-oil salesmen keep you away from products that amplify your efforts.
  • Myth- I Eat A Good Diet, I Don’t Need Supplements
The Truth – A well-balanced diet is a good start, but it does not mean that you are meeting all of your body’s nutritional needs. Nutrient needs can change and fluctuate because of age, health, stress and intense training. Consider supplements an insurance policy, one that fills in the gaps.
  • Myth-Supplements Cause Many Side Effects
The Truth – The majority of ingredients contained in supplements are found naturally in the human body, or in the food we eat. Proper supplementation yields very minimal side effects.
  • Myth -Creatine Causes Kidney Damage
The Truth – Because of it’s popularity as a performance boosting supplement, creatine use has been extensively studied. Creatine has been shown to be safe and non-toxic for use by individuals with a healthy kidney (renal) function.
  • Myth- Everyone Will Experience The Same Benefits From A Supplement
TheTruth – This is completely false. Each individual is unique, and no two athletes train the same or eat the same. Often times you will find that creatine or pre-workout, nitric oxide supplements work better for some than others. In fact, it is often the case that one person will experience minimal benefits from one brand, but receive great benefits from another. Don’t assume that because a supplement didn’t work well for your friend, that it won’t work for you.
  • Myth- Fat Burners Are A Waste Of Money
The Truth -Most popular fat burning supplements contain a battery of ingredients that are effective at stimulating your metabolism and encouraging and assisting the body with burning fat. While fat burners are certainly not miracle products that will help you shed fat even if you are eating poorly, combined with weight training, cardio and a proper diet they assist in bolstering your energy and metabolism during long periods of weight loss.
  • Myth -Our Body Produces Enough Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Its Own
The Truth – The body doesn’t produce omega-3 fatty acids on its own. Omega-3’s are considered essential, meaning the body is incapable of producing them, and they must be obtained through the food we eat. Supplements such as fish oil supply the body with needed omega-3 fatty acids, and are very beneficial to hard-training athletes and individuals who are on a limited calorie diet.
  • Myth - Protein supplements/shakes are an essential part of someone who actively exercises diet
The Truth-You can easily reach your Protein requirements for your level of training without supplements by eating the correct portions and amounts you need from food

  • Myth-Post working out, protein is the most important nutrient to take to prevent muscle breakdown
TheTruth-In reality, carbohydrate is the most important. You should take in more Carb as opposed to protein after working out to help minimize degradation (protein breakdown). This helps maximise Protein synthesis. Pretty much together carb & pro post-working out is the right combo, instead of protein alone

Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity is tooth discomfort in one or more teeth that is triggered by hot, cold, sweet, or sour foods and drinks, or even by breathing cold air. The pain can be sharp, sudden, and shoot deep into the nerve endings of your teeth.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?
Sensitive teeth occur when the underlying layer of your teeth (the dentin) becomes exposed as a result of receding gum tissue (the protective blanket that covers the tooth roots). The roots, which are not covered by hard enamel, contain thousands of tiny tubules leading to the tooth's nerve center (the pulp). These dentinal tubules (or channels) allow the stimuli , for example, the hot, cold, or sweet food -- to reach the nerve in your tooth, which results in the pain you feel.

There are many factors that may lead to sensitive teeth, including:
  • Brushing too hard. Over time, brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear down enamel and cause the dentin to be exposed. It can also cause recession of the gums (the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth)
  • Tooth decay near the gum line.
  • Recession of the gums. As gums move away from a tooth due to conditions such as periodontal disease, the root surface becomes exposed.
  • Gum disease (gingivitis) . Inflamed and sore gum tissue may cause sensitivity due to the loss of supporting ligaments, which exposes the root surface that leads directly to the nerve of the tooth.
  • Cracked teeth. Chipped or broken teeth may fill with bacteria from plaque and enter the pulp causing Inflammation.
  • Teeth grinding . Grinding or clenching your teeth may wear down the enamel and expose underlying dentin.
  • Exaggeration in tooth whitening or daily toothpaste with baking soda and peroxide. These products are major contributors to sensitive teeth.
  • Your age. Tooth sensitivity is highest between the ages of 25 and 30.
  • Plaque build-up. The presence of plaque on the root surfaces can cause sensitivity.
  • Mouthwash use. Long-term use of some mouthwashes. Some over-the-counter mouthwashes contain acids that can worsen tooth sensitivity if you have exposed dentin (the middle layer of the tooth). The acids further damage the dentin layer of the tooth. If you have dentin sensitivity, ask your dentist about the use of a neutral fluoride solution.
  • Acidic foods. Regular consumption of foods with a high acid content, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, pickles, and tea, can cause enamel erosion.
  • Recent routine dental procedures. Sensitivity can occur following teeth cleaning, root planing, crown placement, and tooth restoration. Sensitivity caused by dental procedures is temporary, usually disappearing in four to six weeks.
What Can I Do to Reduce Tooth Sensitivity?
Some steps you can take to prevent tooth sensitivity include:
  • Maintain good oral hygiene. Continue to follow proper brushing and flossing techniques to thoroughly clean all parts of your teeth and mouth.
  • Use a soft bristled toothbrush. This will result in less toothbrush abrasion to the tooth surface and less irritation to your gums. Brush gently and carefully around the gum line so you do not remove more gum tissue.
  • Use desensitizing toothpaste. There are several brands of toothpaste available for sensitive teeth. With regular use you should notice a decrease in sensitivity. You may need to try several different brands to find the product that works best for you. Another tip. spread a thin layer of the toothpaste on the exposed tooth roots with your finger or a Q-tip before you go to bed. Do not use a tartar control toothpaste; rather, use a fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Watch what you eat. As I mentioned, Frequent consumption of highly acid foods can gradually dissolve tooth enamel and lead to dentin exposure. They may also aggravate the sensitivity and start the pain reaction.
  • Use fluoridated dental products. Daily use of a fluoridated mouth rinse can decrease sensitivity. Ask your dentist about available products for home use.
  • Avoid teeth grinding. If you grind or clench your teeth, use a mouth guard at night.
  • See your dentist at regular intervals. Get professional tooth cleaning, oral hygiene instructions, and fluoride treatments every six months (or sooner depending on your condition).
  • If you still have discomfort, talk to your dentist. There may be some dental procedures that may help reduce sensitivity, including the use of: White fillings (bonding) to cover exposed root surfaces/ Fluoride varnishes applied to the exposed root surface/ Dentin sealers applied to the exposed root surface.
Have a nice weekend everyone!
